First Day of Summer ideas: Bucket lists, Staycations, & sandy ice cream?

Happy Summer Solstice!  In our hemisphere summer solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year.  There are so many fun ways to kick off the first day of summer!  My kids made a "staycation" list of fun things to do in our town this summer. They love crossing things off the list and giving it a thumbs up or thumbs down ranking.  Thankfully, all our activities have been thumbs up so far!  Hopefully we can make a "Thumb's Up" storybook/scrapbook of all our summer adventures!

I've also heard it called a bucket list, which is a great name for the younger kids:  grab a bucket and have your kids make a list (or draw pictures) of the top 10 things they want to do before the summer ends (before the summer "kicks the bucket"). The bucket list makes me think of the Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman movie about two friends seeing the world before they kick the bucket.

If you go with the bucket list idea, have some fun decorating
your buckets with stickers or adhesive vinyl:

Some of the "thumb's up" favorites so far:

Building sand castles
(not easy with younger siblings "assisting")

When we got home we made our own "sandy" ice cream topping
to match the sand between our toes!

Sandy ice cream topping:
Easy, easy....vanilla ice cream with blue sugar on top for water,
then smashed golden sandwich cookies for the sand!
(and tasted soooo much better than real sand!)

Happy first day of summer!
