Pipe cleaner critters & Passport to Adventure

Looking for an adventure?  Here is your passport, complete with all the necessary information to discover all Kansas City has to offer!  This booklet can be picked up at any of the 26 participating sites.  We started last week with a trip to the Ernie Miller Nature Center.

The booklet contains a description of what you'd find at the site, the hours the site is open, and a question that could be answered at the site.  Find the answer to the question and get a stamp in your passport.  Get all 26 sites stamped, mail in your passport, and earn a prize!  A fun challenge, and we get to discover new places & revisit some favorites!

The passport idea can be transferred to lots of projects.  Have your kids start a notebook of what they are doing during the summer, places they visit, camps, etc...and look up trivia to write in their notebook.  They could use stickers or make their own stamp
to use when they complete the experience.

My kids' three favorites at Ernie Miller Nature Center:
owls, chalk rubbings, & the trails

Pipe Cleaner Critter Craft:
pipe cleaners
markers/white sheet of paper (optional)

After seeing them on our outing, my kids made a butterfly & a fish.
I put a sheet of white paper under their designs
so they could draw eyes and other features with markers.

Simple, yet the pipe cleaners entertained them for about 20 minutes!

Happy exploring, our word for the week:)

"We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive
where we started and know the place for the first time."  (T.S. Eliot)

  1. Melanie, thanks to your suggestion here, we visited Ernie Miller today. The kids did butterfly rubbings, watched the turtle and fish swim, and walked the shaded trails. Good times!
